Urban Meyer to lead Jacksonville Jaguars

One of college football’s most successful and recognizable coaches has returned to the sidelines, but this time in the NFL.

Urban Meyer was named the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2021. The Jaguars have the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and also have over $73 million in salary cap space available.

Meyer won three NCAA national championships and compiled a 187-32 college record as head coach for Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State. Meyer won two titles with Florida (2006, 2008), and one with Ohio State (2014). He had two undefeated seasons and six one-loss seasons as a head coach.

He retired from coaching due to health reasons in 2018, but has chosen to come back to coaching once again.

“I’ve analyzed this decision from every angle — the time is right in Jacksonville, and the time is right for me to return to coaching. I’m excited about the future of this organization and our long term prospect for success.” Meyer, said in a statement.

Meyer researched the league with the help of former players and friends, then researched building a potential squad and learned how an NFL front office functions.

It is believed Meyer has his eye on former Dallas Cowboy offensive coordinator Scott Lineham as a prime candidate to join him as an assistant coach in Jacksonville according to ESPN’s Todd Archer and Jeremy Fowler.

Meyer was born in Toledo, Ohio, grew up in Ashtabula, Ohio, and attended the University of Cincinnati, where he played football as a defensive back. Meyer spent the previous two years as an analyst for Fox Sports.
