The Colorado Rockies announced on Monday that a fan suspected of repeatedly shouting a racial slur at Miami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson actually yelled “Dingier,” the club’s mascot.
Previously on Sunday, the Rockies said they were “disgusted” by supposedly racist abuse aimed at Brinson in the ninth inning when the team faced each other. The Rockies won the game 13-8.
“After a thorough investigation that included calls, emails and video clips from concerned fans, media and broadcast partners, the Colorado Rockies have concluded that the fan was indeed yelling for Rockies mascot Dinger in hopes of getting his attention for a photo, and there was never any racial slur that occurred,” the Rockies said Monday in a statement.
The fan’s identity was not revealed. He was suspected of verbally abusing Brinson, who is Black, after his shouts were picked up by both teams’ broadcasts.
“Neither Lewis nor any other Marlins on the field or in the dugout heard what was shouted,” Marlins spokesperson Jason Latimer told The Associated Press.
