Patriots WR Julian Edelman announces his retirement from NFL

New England Patriots wide receiver and past Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman has announced he is retiring from the NFL.

The Patriots had released the longtime wide receiver on Monday.

“It was a hard decision, but the right decision for me and my family,” Edelman said. “And I’m honored and so proud to be retiring a Patriot. … It’s been the best 12 years of my life.”

Edelman entered the final season of a $15.5 million, two-year deal and was on the verge of a large pay hike to get a spot on the 2021 roster. But, that changed abruptly late Monday afternoon with his announcement.

This brought a sudden end to Edelman’s 11-year tenure in New England, where he won three Super Bowls and was named Super Bowl MVP in 2019 after missing the complete 2017 season following a torn cruciate ligament.

Edelman caught 10 passes for 141 yards in that game.

In Super Bowl XLIX, he also scored the decisive touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks and rounded out the historic comeback win over the Atlanta Falcons with a catch two years later.
