NFL player Jonathan Owens said he was proud of his gymnast girlfriend, Simone Biles, who withdrew from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
“I’m so proud of y’all 🤞🏽❤️,” Owens commented on Biles’ Instagram post where she uploaded a picture of herself with the U.S. women’s gymnastics team, Sunisa Lee, Jordan Chiles, and Grace McCallum, who won silver.
“OLYMPIC SILVER MEDALISTS 🤍,” Biles captioned the post. “I’m SO proud of these girls right here. You girls are incredibly brave & talented! I’ll forever be inspired by your determination to not give up and to fight through adversity! They stepped up when I couldn’t. thanks for being there for me and having my back! forever love y’all.”
Previously on Tuesday, Biles said she withdrew from the Games “to focus on mental health.”
USA Gymnastics initially reported her withdrawal was caused by a “medical issue.”
“Physically, I feel good, I’m in shape,” Biles said after her withdrawal. “Emotionally, that kind of varies on the time and moment.”
After doing a Yurchenko 3/2 twist instead of an Amanar, Biles landed awkwardly on the vault. She produced only a 13.766, a low score for her standards, resulting in her exiting the Games.
Former U.S. gymnastics Olympian Laurie Hernandez described her rather unusual performance as being “lost in the air.”
“That’s crazy,” said Hernandez, who is working as an analyst for Peacock. “We can tell she gets lost in the air … and she opens up. You see her head looking to the right. She’s twisting to the right. It looked like she wanted to keep twisting but got lost in the air.”
