New York Yankees pitcher Zack Britton was placed on the 60-day injured list on Monday and will undergo surgery to remove a bone chip from his elbow on September 8, multiple reports say.
The 33-year-old pitcher met with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, an orthopedic surgeon, to consult his condition.
According to Lindsey Adler of The Athletic, doctors will examine Britton’s ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) to see if Tommy John surgery is required as well, potentially ending the season for Britton.
“I’m hopeful [the UCL] doesn’t need anything, or anything too invasive,” said Britton.
Britton has played for the Yankees since 2018. Previously, he spent his professional career with the Baltimore Orioles, who selected him in the 2006 Major League Baseball draft.
“It’s disappointing to end this way,” said Britton. “But [I’ve] been playing a long time and been fortunate not to have a lot of injuries.”
Britton was named to the All-Star team in 2015 and 2016.
In 2020, Britton had eight saves and a 1.89 ERA. In the same year, the New York Yankees picked up Britton’s $14 million option for 2022.
