New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge surpassed Roger Maris’ 1961 record of 61 home runs. In the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Texas Rangers, Judge smacked home run number 62.

The AL’s single-season home run record has now been surpassed by Judge, who sits seventh in MLB’s single-season home run record.

It would take only one home run for the star hitter to tie Sammy Sosa’s 63 home runs in 1999, and two to tie Sosa’s 64 home runs in 2001.

As a player who rarely displays emotions, Judge slammed his helmet in the dugout on Tuesday as he became frustrated. It is likely that he missed a few pitches in the first game. The fact that it took him about two weeks to surpass Maris as the new AL king suggests that Judge was under pressure.

In the second game, things worked out for Judge. The star outfielder hit his record-breaking homer to left field in the top of the first inning when Venezuelan pitcher Jesus Tinoco was on the mound. It was a moment of relief for the Yankees’ hard hitter.

Standing among the greats, Judge said it was “an honor” seeing his name being mentioned alongside Maris and Babe Ruth, two former Yankees greats.

Judge thanked his family and friends, as well as Maris’ family, who attended a few of the Yankees’ games in New York and Toronto.

Many sports and non-sports figures congratulated the four-time All-Star for his historic feat, including Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, President Joe Biden and Yankees legend Derek Jeter.

"At home, in the dugout, I can see right in and see all the guys sitting at the top steps. Here on the road, they are behind me, so I didn't see the 40-plus people sitting in the dugout. So, I think, to finally see them run out on the field and get a chance to hug them all, that's what it's about for me."
