Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander has turned down a $25 million option for next season. He entered free agency on Thursday, joining Mychal Givens, Tommy Pham, and Jordan Lyles.

Verlander turned down the offer five days after leading the Astros to their second World Series title. When asked what he would do next, the 39-year-old told reporters that it was too early to think about his future.

Verlander pitched for the Detroit Tigers from 2005 until his acquisition by the Astros in August 2017. He signed a $66 million contract for 2020 and 2021 with the team. The Astros then offered him a new contract, a two-year, $50 million deal worth $25 million per season that allowed him to opt-out after 2022 if he pitched 130 innings.

His decision earned him a place in the ranks of the best free-agent pitchers. With the Astros, Verlander has a 61-19 record. He led the team to 18 wins in 28 starts, a 0.82 WHIP, a 1.75 ERA, and 185 strikeouts in 175 innings this season. So far, he is 244-133 with a 3.24 ERA and 3,198 strikeouts in 17 seasons.

His outstanding performance this season made him a Cy Young Award finalist. The winner of the award will be announced on November 16. Earlier, he won the award in 2019, underwent Tommy John surgery in 2020, and missed the entire 2021 season.

Following the World Series win on Saturday night, speculation arose that the right-handed pitcher would soon retire. During the celebration of the triumph, his wife, Kate Upton, addressed the issue.

“I love watching my husband do what he loves…to see him do his craft. He’s such an artist out there when he’s pitching,” Upton told Fox MLB.
