Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani made history in Thursday’s game despite his team losing to the Houston Astros 3-1.

The 27-year-old designated hitter became the first player in the MLB to throw the first pitch for the Angels and also see his team’s first pitch of the season at the plate.

According to the New York Post, Ohtani’s first pitch was recorded at 99 mph to Astros’ José Altuve.

Ohtani’s performance, however, was overshadowed by Houston’s Framber Valdez, who was responsible for the Astros’ Opening Day victory.

Ohtani’s strong pitching was perhaps too much, and prompted LA manager Joe Maddon to pull him out early over concerns about his arm.

Ohtani threw 80 pitches in 4 2/3 and struck out nine, the most by an Angels starter since Jered Weaver’s 2012 Opening Day.

On the other hand, Valdez pitched 6 2/3 innings and only gave up two-hits. He went on to retire 15 LA hitters in a row after the Angels’ Matt Duffy hit a single in the second inning.

“When I saw the ball flying in the air, I was mad with myself that I didn’t make my best pitch,” Valdez said.
