Frances Tiafoe, the last remaining American professional tennis player in the U.S. Open, advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating world No. 3 Rafael Nadal 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Monday.

Ranked No. 22 in the world, Tiafoe shocked the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium on his triumph over the 22-time Grand Slam men’s singles champion. All praise should be given to the 24-year-old as he started the match strong, and despite a slight hiccup in the second set, Tiafoe bounced back to take the match.

He recalled the intense exchange with Nadal throughout the match, saying, “My legs were like cement. I was like, ‘Just get out of the game, get out of the game,’ and I did.”

The win was worth celebrating for Tiafoe, who had tireless serves to corner the Spanish pro in the game. Tiafoe wrapped up the match with 18 aces, while Nadal only made nine.

The defeat for Nadal means he will have to pack his bags from the U.S. Open and return back home to Mallorca.

“It’s been a few months a little difficult in every way, this is the reality, the 36-year old Nadal said. “And from there, I will start again professionally and, on a personal level, finish with something that is important in my life, which is having my first child. I trust that everything will turn out well.”

Up next for Tiafoe is Russian professional Andrey Rublev, who defeated Britain’s Cameron Norrie with a dominating 3-0 set win on Sunday.
