Hall of Famer manager Tony La Russa will be back to manage the Chicago White Sox for the 2022 season, a source told ESPN on Thursday.

Chicago All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson has expressed his hope for La Russa to stay longer at Guaranteed Rate Field.

“I want him to be back,” Anderson said. “At the end of the day, my decision doesn’t really matter. I guess it all depends on what the front office thinks. … I definitely want him in. I think he did a great job with the way he managed and just being open.”

First baseman José Abreu told the Chicago Sun-Times, “He won’t leave us alone. He’s going to be with us.”

Abreu also said he thanked La Russa’s postgame press conference in which the 77-year-old said Abreu was hit “intentionally” by Astros reliever Kendall Graveman in the eighth inning of Game 4.

“It was a natural reaction,” Abreu told reporters, according to MLB.com. “That’s the kind of reaction that I would have if something happened to one of my children. Tony was trying to protect me, and he’s always trying to protect us.”

La Russa started his managerial career with the Chicago White Sox back in 1979 before he moved to the Oakland Athletics, where he won the World Series in 1989. La Russa left Oakland following the 1995 season to manage the St. Louis Cardinals and led the team to two World Series titles in 2006 and 2011.

In the 2021 offseason, La Russa returned for his second stint with the Chicago White Sox after the firing of Rick Renteria.

“I think he did a great job, coming in and being a part of what we’ve been trying to do,” Anderson added. “I couldn’t be more happy than what he did. The relationship was great overall. Everybody was just getting along with him. I think he came in and did what he was supposed to do.”
