For Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, who played for 20 seasons and won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots, it was a homecoming to remember.

Not only did he lead the Bucs to a 19-17 win over the his former team, but in the process he officially became the league’s all-time leader in passing yards when he completed a 28-yard pass to Mike Evans in the first quarter of the game on Sunday Night.

The veteran QB has now thrown for 80,362 yards to surpass the record of 80,358 yards set by Drew Brees, the New Orleans Saints quarterback who retired at the end of the 2020 season.

“I feel good that we won,” Brady said about the game in an ESPN.com article. “It was just some emotional moments thinking about coming up here and playing. I know why it’s tough to come in here and win a game all these years. This team does a great job. They make you earn it. It’s a tough football environment. The crowd is into it. I’m just really happy we got a win.”

The record is likely to remain unbroken for years if Brady keeps playing in the NFL. The player with the second-most career yards is Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who trails Brady by approximately 20,000 yards.

During warm-ups, the Gillette Stadiums fans gave Brady a standing ovation and chanted his name. Before the kickoff, the Patriots played a short tribute video of Brady. However, the atmosphere of the stadium suddenly changed when the 44-year-old took the field for the Bucs’ opening drive. Brady was instantly booed.

“I’m grateful for everything Tom did, but that’s in the past,” said Randy Greeley, a longtime Patriots’ season ticket holder who wore the jersey of Mac Jones, the team’s new QB. “My loyalty is to the Pats.”

Tampa Bay played without another former Patriots player, tight end Rob Gronkowski, who suffered a rib injury in last week’s 34-24 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. However, five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman, who was signed earlier in the week, played the entire game.
