On Saturday night’s episode of “UFC 278 with the Gronks” broadcast, UFC president Dana White said that Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and former tight end Rob Gronkowski almost signed with the Las Vegas Raiders during the 2020 free agency season. Raiders head coach Jon Gruden, however, “blew the deal up” at the time.

Brady, a six-time Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots, entered free agency in early 2020 with the intention of leaving the team. Though Gronkowski had been out of the NFL for a year, he was still under contract with the Patriots. Eventually, Gronkowski followed Brady to Tampa Bay, where the two of them won the Super Bowl with the Buccaneers in 2021.

When questioned by Gronk during the broadcast, White said he had no intention of sharing the story. Gronk addressed the topic on the broadcast, claiming that during Brady’s free agency, the quarterback was promoted by White to the Raiders. He then asked the UFC president “what went wrong” and the reason Brady didn’t sign with the Raiders.

White pointed his finger at Gruden for failing to bring the iconic duo to Las Vegas.

“I worked to put that deal together for Brady and Gronk to come to the Raiders. It was almost a done deal. At the last minute, Gruden blew the deal up and said that he didn’t want them,” said White, who has no official ties to the Raiders.

“All hell broke loose, man. It was crazy. Brady was already looking at houses, and it wasn’t being said yet that Gronk was coming. So Las Vegas would have had Brady and Gronk the year the Bucs won the Super Bowl, except Gruden blew the deal up.”

For his part, Gronks was relieved that he didn’t join the Raiders. He was delighted to have played with the Buccaneers.

"I'm glad it did not go through," Gronkowski said. "It all worked out for the best, man. I'm glad we went to Tampa, man. It just worked out. I love that place."

"I know when Tom was a free agent about two to three years ago when he went to Tampa, you gave him a recruiting pitch on why he should join the Las Vegas Raiders."

- Rob Gronkowski

"One of the teams, they weren't interested at the very end. I was thinking, ‘You're sticking with that mother [bleeper]?'"

- Tom Brady

"You never know, I could have been in Vegas with you the last three years man, what the heck?"

- Rob Gronkowski
