The defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by superstar Tom Brady, defeated the visiting Dallas Cowboys 31-29 at Raymond James Stadium on Thursday in the NFL season opener.
Brady completed 32-of-59 passes for 379 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. The 44-year-old connected two of those four TDs to Rob Gronkowski.
The Buccaneers did not start strong. The Cowboys even managed to take a 29-28 lead in the fourth quarter on Greg Zuerlein’s 48-yard field goal.
The Bucs took possession of the ball with 1:24 remaining on the clock. Brady managed to complete a 47-yard pass to Antonio Brown. Then, with 18 seconds left in the game, he completed a 24-yard pass to Chris Godwin to set up the winning field goal.
Kicker Ryan Succop then stepped up and kicked a game-winning field goal with 10 seconds remaining for the Bucs’ first victory of the season.
Brady made his 300th regular-season start in the game, the first player in the league to do so.
“I’ve been playing a long time,” Brady said after the game. “That’s a lot of football.”
The Buccaneers will play the Atlanta Falcons in Tampa on September 19.
