The Houston Texans have parted ways with David Culley as head coach after only one season.

The Texans went 4-13 under Culley and finished in 30th place in the NFL’s scoring category. They were also 31st for the most rushing yards allowed per game, and 27th in points allowed.

The team struggled to replace quarterback Deshaun Watson, who was benched the entire 2021 season due to legal issues. The team started 2-9 under rookie Davis Mills, who became the starting quarterback, and the rookie showed improvement during the season.

Aside from Mills, the team was led by several key players, including receiver Brandin Cooks and defensive end Jonathan Greenard.

According to Nick Caserio, the general manager of the Houston Texans, he and Culley had different visions for the team’s future. CEO Cal McNair said that the decision was difficult, but they were made for the organization’s future.

“These decisions are difficult, but Nick (Caserio) believed it was necessary for the future of our organization,” McNair said. “We look forward to continuing to build our roster and finding the right coach to lead us forward.”

Culley, who is 66 years old, had been the receivers coach for the Baltimore Ravens. He also served as the assistant head coach and defensive backs coach for various teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999 to 2012, the Kansas City Chiefs from 2013 to 2016, and he was a college football assistant coach from 1978 to 1993.

Culley becomes the latest head coach to be sacked by NFL teams following the end of the regular season. Others who were let go include Mike Zimmer, Matt Nagy, and Vic Fangio.
