Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Chris Taylor swung his bat in the ninth inning and said goodbye to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Taylor hit a walk-off, two-run home run to give the Dodgers a 3-1 win Wednesday night in a National League Wild Card Game, which helped end the Cardinals’ season.
“Honestly, I was just trying to hit a single,” Taylor said post-game. “Not trying to do too much. He [Alex Reyes] gave me a good slider to hit and I was able to get it up in the air.”
The Dodgers will now face the San Francisco Giants.
“That’s gonna be fun,” Taylor added. “Yeah, two of the best regular-season records of all time. We’ve been battling all year, so I expect a hard-fought series.”
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts could not hide his excitement for the upcoming series against the Giants.
“One of the great rivalries in sports,” Roberts said. “It’s happening.”
Meanwhile, St. Louis finished 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position. The Cardinals went on a 17-game winning streak last month to secure the second wild-card spot, only to see their October dreams crushed.
“That’s a clubhouse full of guys that are hurting,” manager Mike Shildt said.
The Dodgers travel to Oracle Park for the first of two games in their playoff series against the Giants starting this Friday night. The two teams have never met in the playoffs in their 121-year history.
