The NFL is in mourning. At the age of 24 and when he was just about to begin his career, the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins’s journey was cut short in a fatal accident in Florida.

“The news was shocking. A lot of us didn’t expect to hear something like that,” ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith said on First Take. “My heart goes out to his wonderful wife. They just got married in March of 2021.”

Haskin spent his college years at Ohio State from 2016 to 2018, majoring in journalism. In 2018, he was named a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award and finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting. The following January, Haskins declared for the 2019 NFL Draft.

“When you think about Dwayne you just think about the compassion he had, certainly for all of his teammates and his friends. He always took time after practice to be around family members, kids,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said.

According to Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Indiana Miranda, the incident was reported shortly after 6:30 a.m. and Haskins had been “walking on (the highway) for unknown reasons.”

He was trying to cross Interstate-95’s westbound lanes in Broward County when a dump truck suddenly hit him.

In recent days, Haskins had been actively working out with his other Steelers teammates in South Florida. Earlier, he also stated that he planned to work harder this year.

“I definitely believe I have the talent to be a starter in this league,” he stated. “And that’s something I have to do this offseason to put myself in position to play.”

Haskins is survived by his wife, parents, and sister. May they be given strength and may he rest in peace.

“His smile was infectious and he was a guy you wanted to be around,” the Steelers’ defensive tackle Cameron Heyward reminisced.
