Pittsburgh Steelers training camp has officially started and quarterback Mitch Trubisky, together with his teammates, is preparing for the upcoming new season that starts in September.

Since Ben Roethlisberger announced his retirement after last season, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin now has to choose between Trubisky and rookie Kenny Pickett to lead the team for the 2022-23 season. The 27-year-old Trubisky expressed his confidence that he will be able to fill Roethlisberger’s shoes.

“I feel very comfortable,” Trubisky said on KDKA-FM Radio Pittsburgh. “I feel I have a very good grasp of the offense and what Coach wants us to do. I think the first couple of weeks of training camp we are trying to establish our identity and see what we are good at.

“My job is to just get the playmakers the ball — Diontae, Chase, Najee, Pat, those guys who can go up and make plays. I’m just trying to lead the offense.”

“Understand that Ben has an amazing legacy here and we respect and honor that,” Trubisky said. “I can only come here and be me, Mitch Trubisky. I’m coming here to compete and help lead these guys.”

Trubisky spent last year with the Buffalo Bills to be the understudy of starting quarterback Josh Allen until Pittsburgh came knocking on his door. Trubisky wanted to prove himself as a capable leader on the field and decided to join the Steelers in March this year.  The former Bill had some mishaps at July 27 practice as he threw incompletions during his reps with the first-team offense and then got intercepted again on the third. However. Trubisky did not want to think too much about that and believed coach Tomlin will see his true potential.

“He (Mike Tomlin) wants us to go out there and play free,” Trubisky said. “He told us that. You are not worried about every single throw, it’s practice. There are test throws. You let guys go make plays. You got to go out there and not worry about every single throw.”

Trubisky was drafted by the Chicago Bears with the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

In college. Trubisky threw for 3,748 passing yards with 30 touchdowns and six interceptions in his junior season. As a result of his successful junior season, he was named a member of the third-team All-ACC. Trubisky decided to forgo his senior season and declared for the 2017 NFL Draft on January 9, 2017, opting to give up his final year of college eligibility

“I enjoyed going by Ben’s room,” Tomlin said. “Ben is one of those guys that brought the comforts of home to Latrobe (laughs). He spared no expense or amenity. I walked into that room today and I laughed because Cam Heyward is in that room now, but it’s less comfortable, I’ll say that. Cam is somewhat of a caveman.”
