The Philadelphia 76ers stopped Stephen Curry and the Golden States Warriors’ in impressive fashion on Saturday, as they scored a 102-93 home win with some strong defensive play.

The Sixers’ defensive tactics played a huge part in holding Curry back as he was on a mission to break Ray Allen’s all-time NBA record for three-pointers. In the game, he was held to only three from the three-point line and is now just seven away from passing Allen.

“There’s obviously a lot of attention on it which is well-deserved, it’s an all-time NBA record, and it’s one that’s been standing for 10, 11 years, so I appreciate the attention on it and it will happen when it happens,” Curry said. “You got to continue to try and win games in the process.”

Sixers center Joel Embiid and young guard Matisse Thybulle stole the show with their outstanding defense against the Warriors. It was not unexpected since Thybull was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team this year.

ESPN’s Tim Bontemps reported that Doc Rivers’ team held the Warriors to “a season-low 93 points and Stephen Curry to 3-for-14 shooting.”

Thybulle shared his strategies on how to stop the three-time NBA champion that night.

“Play hard.” he said. “But seriously just have guys willing to let me take on that 1-on-1 matchup (against Curry) and play the rest of the team 4-on-4 and be able to over-rotate. Honestly, (it was a) really tough rotation situations on defense and put out a lot of fires to allow me to stay close to (Curry’s) body and not let Steph get anything easy.”

Even Warriors coach Steve Kerr tipped his hat for Thybulle and acknowledged his defensive ability on the court.

“I give Thybulle credit,” Kerr said. “I thought he was fantastic defensively. He’s a rare combination of length and athleticism and brains and he did as good a job on Steph as anybody I’ve seen in a long time.”
