Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Shohei Ohtani was unanimously awarded the 2021 American League MVP award after his impressive performance this past season, Major League Baseball announced Thursday. He became the 11th player to unanimously win the award.
Other contenders for this season’s MVP were Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge, and recent free agent Marcus Semien, who played for the Toronto Blue Jays last year.
This is the second unanimous MVP decision for the Angels since Mike Trout won it back in 2014.
“Ohtani produced 4.9 Wins Above Replacement as a batter and 4.2 WAR as a pitcher this season. His 9.1 WAR overall was the best mark in MLB by a wide margin,” ESPN tweeted.
This past season, Ohtani hit 46 home runs, which put him third in the American League. And, as a starting pitcher, he had a 9-2 record with a 3.18 ERA, while recording 156 strikeouts in only 130 innings.
There has been no other player this dominant in the game since Babe Ruth over 100 years ago.
