The Los Angeles Angels closed its series against the Boston Red Sox by beating them 8-0 on Thursday thanks to Shohei Ohtani’s 11 strikeouts in seven shutout innings.

The Japanese pitcher also had two hits and a run batted in. One hit nailed the Green Monster at the speed of 109 mph that smashed his No. 17’s pitcher’s slot on the manual scoreboard.

Additionally, he became the first pitcher to hit in one of the top four spots in the batting order since Babe Ruth did it on Sept. 20, 1919.

"It's pretty special to see somebody like that come along. I think everybody should be really appreciating what we're seeing, because it’s something we haven't seen in 100 years and we may never see it again for another 100 years."

Not Since Babe Ruth

Angels manager Joe Maddon praised his pitcher, saying Ohtani’s playing skills never cease to amaze the 68-year-old manager.

Meanwhile, Red Sox pitcher Rich Hill agreed with Maddon’s assessment of the young pitcher and even said it would take another 100 years for any player to match Ohtani’s accomplishments.

“I hope you don’t start taking that for granted. Like it’s old hat,” Maddon said of Ohtani's performance. “It’s just so unusual. It’s otherworldly, on this level of this game.”

"He's the best player in the league," Hill said. "I think that's one thing everybody can pretty much unanimously agree upon.

“It’s one of my favorite ballparks,” said Ohtani, who has batted .302 with two homers in 10 games at Fenway. “I was looking forward to pitching here.”

- Shohei Ohtani
