Russell Westbrook is regarded as one of the most athletic point guards in NBA history. In three of the last four seasons, the two-time scoring champion has averaged a triple-double. Regardless, Westbrook has been criticized for his failure to win games and making turnovers.

It’s been a mixed bag with Westbrook, who is showing some deterioration in his athletic abilities. On par with his stellar regular season run in Houston in 2019–20, he has been the Lakers’ third-leading scorer (19.6 ppg), top assist man (8.1 apg), and second-best rebounder (7.9 RPG).

However, Westbrook’s jump shot conversion is continuing to dip, and his turnover rate is a continual source of concern. The former MVP has now turned the ball over in 401 consecutive games, which is a new record in the NBA.

With the 16-18 Lakers on a five-game losing run, Westbrook has heard a lot of opinions on his play style. Shannon Sharpe of Fox Sports’ morning show, “Undisputed: Skip and Shannon” piled on the criticism of Westbrook.

“He’s convinced us that the triple-double is the end all be all because he got a triple-double,” Sharpe said. “We overlooked the turnovers. He was getting 11-12 assists but he’d have 8 or 9 turnovers.”

The 33-year-old, on the other hand, seemed unconcerned about it. Westbrook addressed the intense scrutiny directed at him at a recent media appearance.

“I’m over the whole situation of what everybody else wants me to be doing and what they think I should do,” the former MVP said.

Although Westbrook has had some noteworthy clutch moments this season, he hasn’t lived up to expectations, with Lakers star LeBron James doing all the heavy lifting. Most people expected Westbrook to handle the Lakers’ offense, relieving James of some of the load.
