A bronze sculpture of NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna was unveiled on Wednesday in Calabasas, California at the crash site where the two were killed along with seven others.
The Bryants were killed in a helicopter crash exactly two years ago on Wednesday. The crash was determined by federal investigators to be caused by pilot disorientation due to foggy conditions.
The statue was created by Los Angeles-based sculptor Dan Medina. It portrays Kobe Bryant in his Lakers uniform with his arm around his daughter, who is also wearing a basketball uniform while carrying a basketball.
The base of the statue displays the names of all the victims of the crash. Also engraved at the base of the statue are the words “Heroes come and go, but legends are forever.”
According to Medina, the statue will temporarily stand at the site. A lawsuit related to the crash, meanwhile, is expected to go to trial on February 22 this year.
The statue weighs around 160-pounds and is made of bronze. Despite being designated as a temporary tribute, Medina was hopeful the city would allow him to place a bigger version of the statue permanently in the same location.
