Seattle Mariners outfielder Kyle Lewis will not be playing for the rest of the season due to a bone bruise in his right knee, manager Scott Servais said Tuesday.
Servais surmised that Lewis experienced the issue when attempting sliding drills last weekend.
“I suspect that’s how it happened,” Servais said. “I don’t know exactly. … The last couple days before, he was getting ready to go out and the rehab really picked up the intensity of running the bases. The little sliding thing on the pad is nothing more than a formality you go through, what we do with all of our guys, and coming back the next day, he felt sore.”
The 54-year-old manager added that the medical team is working on this right now, and the circumstances are not on their side.
“So, having some other people look at it and seeing where it was at right now, that’s what was determined,” said Servis. “And we needed to let it quiet down. And, again, if this was the situation in June, it’d be different. We’re not in June. We’re headed towards the middle of September here, so the calendar has gotten us a little bit on this one.”
Lewis will continue to work out at T-Mobile Park and stay with the club during home games. He will need around six months to fully recover and rehab.
