The cheering fans in the American Airlines Center could not stop the Los Angeles Lakers from beating the hometown Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, as rookie Austin Reaves hit a buzzer-beating game winner in OT to give the Lakers a 107-104 win victory.
LeBron James scored 24 points, Russell Westbrook added 23, and Anthony Davis, who is recovering from a sore knee, had his sixth double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
For Dallas, who was playing its third consecutive game without their All-Star guard Luka Doncic, Jalen Brunson scored 25 points and Kristaps Porzingis had 23 points and 12 rebounds.
“We haven’t really been healthy,” said Mavs Dirk Nowitzki. “I think it showed if one guy of our best two is out we struggle to compete on both ends, and sometimes we lose, unfortunately, games we should win. But if we’re all healthy and KP and Luka are both playing, I think we’re a very good team.”
Meanwhile, three Lakers players, including starter Talen Horton-Tucker, and several staff members entered the NBA’s health and safety protocol this week, the sign of increasing concern over post-Thanksgiving COVID-19 outbreaks across major North American sports.
“Multiple teams in our league (and) hockey (are) dealing with it, football’s dealing with it,” Lakers coach Frank Vogel said. “We’re at the mercy of the virus.”
Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd hopes that the “changes coming” to the NBA’s pandemic protocol will help.
Next up, the Lakers travel to Minnesota on Friday, and Dallas faces the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday.
