The Las Vegas Raiders defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-11 in the NFL Hall of Fame game Thursday night.

It was a rewarding homecoming for Josh McDaniels in his first season as the Raiders head coach and because they played in his former high school stadium.

“It was a unique opportunity, very grateful that I had it,” McDaniels said. “It’s the first time I’ve been to this Hall of Fame game in 22 years. To have an opportunity to do that with him (his father, Thom) here, my family and people who helped me along the way, it was a special night for them. I really savored it.”

McDaniels served as an assistant to Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots for six Super Bowls. His first NFL head coaching job was with the Denver Broncos, where he had an 11-17 record. Now his second stint as an NFL head coach is with the Raiders.

Storms forced fans to search for shelter 40 minutes before the game began. The Raiders opened the first quarter with a 6-0 lead on two field goals by Daniel Carlson. A touchdown run by Ameer Abdullah in the second quarter. A 12-yard scramble by QB Jarrett Stidham in the first half made it 20-0.

Down 27-3, the Jaguars found the end zone when Kyle Sloter tossed a 5-yard TD pass to Nathan Cottrell late in the fourth quarter. Cottrell ran up the middle for the 2-point conversion.

Father Knows Best

McDaniels attended Canton McKinley High School as a child. The field was home to him when he played for his father, Thom McDaniels.

In 1997, Thom McDaniels was named national high school football Coach of the Year by USA Today while leading his Canton McKinley team to state and national titles. This was his final season in his first tenure as coach of Canton McKinley.

McDaniels had a 26-year head coaching career that included head coaching stops at Warren G. Harding High School, Canton McKinley High School, and Massillon Jackson High School.

Overall, he was a coach for 40-years and was named to the Ohio high school coaches Hall of Fame.

McDaniels was twice a finalist for NFL high school Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2010. McDaniels coached several notable players including Percy Snow, Mike Doss, Maurice Clarett, and Mario Manningham

Who is John Carroll?

From 1995 to 1998, McDaniels played football primarily as a wide receiver at John Carroll University after being recruited by Greg Debeljak out of Canton McKinley High School. At John Carroll, he lost out to Nick Caserio, who joined the Patriots staff in 2001 (the same year as McDaniels).

The other teammates he had at John Carroll included London Fletcher, formerly a linebacker with the St. Louis Rams, Buffalo Bills, and Washington Redskins; Brian Polian, the former head coach at the University of Nevada-Reno; Jerry Schuplinski, the New York Giants’ quarterbacks coach; Tom Telesco, the Los Angeles Chargers’ general manager; and Dave Ziegler, the General Manager of the Las Vegas Raiders.

There is a long history of success for John Carroll University in the NFL. Alumni coaches and players have been making an impact on football’s biggest stage for decades.  Alumni of John Carroll have been represented in 22 of 53 Super Bowls, dating back to Super Bowl III in 1969. In 2019, six alumni helped New England win Super Bowl LIII.  As of today, John Carroll alumni are employed by 10 NFL teams, or more than 30% of the league. Twelve percent of the players drafted this year will be either be picked by a GM from John Carroll, or by a front office that has a JCU grad with a heavy hand in the selection.
