Pittsburgh Penguins settle 2018 sexual abuse case
Jarrod Skalde and Erin Skalde have reportedly reached a resolution with the Pittsburgh Penguins and the allegations against former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins coach John “Clark” Donatelli.
Donatelli was accused of sexually assaulting Erin Skalde back in 2018. Jarrod Skalde, who was an assistant coach for the Penguins’ minor league affiliate at the time, claimed that the incident occurred when both Skaldes and Donatelli were in a car in Rhode Island for a team road trip.
The Skaldes said that Bill Guerin, who was the Penguins assistant GM at the time and supervised the AHL affiliate, told both of them to stay silent about the sexual abuse when he learned about it.
“The Penguins and Skaldes have agreed to resolve all claims,” the team said in a statement Tuesday. “Through this resolution, the Penguins hope to bring closure to the Skaldes, provide some measure of peace, and continue to encourage and promote a culture of openness, accountability, and respect at all levels of professional sports.”
Erin Skalde also released a statement, saying “the events of the last three years have been deeply challenging, and my hope is to now move forward as an advocate for others.”
The NHL has been rocked with sexual scandal allegations for the past few weeks. The Chicago Blackhawks accepted the resignations of GM Stan Bowman and senior director of hockey administration Al MacIsaac after an independent investigation revealed how the team mishandled the sexual assault allegations against former coach Brad Aldrich during its 2010 Stanley Cup campaign.
Former Blackhawks and current Florida Panthers coach Joel Quenneville also resigned from his position in the wake of this allegation.
Update: I've heard that Erin Skalde did not file her civil suit against the Penguins, Guerin, Lemieux, etc. last week in Rhode Island. There was a press conf. called by her law firm, then delayed. Assuming it helped get gears turning towards a resolution.
