Penguins’ Sidney Crosby sidelined for at least six weeks
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will be out for a minimum of six weeks, the team confirmed on Wednesday.
Crosby, who just underwent wrist surgery, will be focused on his recovery while his teammates prepare for the upcoming season next month.
Penguins general manager Ron Hextall said the 34-year-old had been dealing with the injury for years and decided surgery was the best way to go.
“This is not a new injury for Sid,” Hextall said in a statement. “It is something that he has played through for years. After exhausting all minimally-invasive options and much discussion, it was decided that surgery was in his best interest.”
The Penguins will begin training camp later this month, and the team must carry on without Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, who is still recovering from his knee injury.
“We still have to find ways to win games,” Hextall said. “We all, including Sid, wish we had known this a month or two months ago — that would be great, but we are where we are.”
The two-time NHL Most Valuable Player is entering his 17th season with the Penguins. He helped Pittsburgh win the Stanley Cup three times and became the youngest player in the NHL history to score 100 points in a single season.
The Penguins open the season against the Tampa Bay Lightning on October 12 in Tampa.
