New Orleans Pelicans center Jaxson Hayes has been formally charged with 12 misdemeanor counts, including domestic violence and battery against an officer. He was arrested in July last year in Los Angeles.

The Pelicans said in a statement that they were working with the NBA to address the situation. The statement said, “Since before the charges were filed, the Pelicans have worked in conjunction with the NBA on the matter and will continue to do so moving forward.”

Police officers were called to Hayes’ then-girlfriend’s house last July where the NBA star was found outside. Hayes told the officers that he and the girlfriend “were just having a little argument.” Hayes was then instructed to stay outside, but he refused and instead shoved an officer who attempted to restrain him for being uncooperative.

Following a brief session of wrestling and one taser shot, the officers finally got the NBA player down. An officer placed his knee on Hayes’ neck after he was down on the ground, to which he responded by yelling “I can’t breathe” multiple times. The 21-year-old was then taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

The Los Angeles Police Department Force Investigation Division is currently looking into whether excessive force was used during Hayes’ arrest.

LAPD Chief Michael Moore said last year during a news conference that the arrest was under review due to “the possibility of force being applied to the suspect’s neck during the use of force in taking him into custody.”

According to the New Orleans Advocate, the results of the investigation may take as long as one year to be completed and released.
