Boston Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron recorded his 1,000th NHL point with a secondary assist to Brad Marchand who scored  to lead Boston to a 5-3 win over the hosting Tampa Bay Lightning.

Bergeron became the fourth Boston player and the 94th player in NHL history to hit the mark. He also is the 41st player in the NHL to have 1,000 points with one team.

With the feat, Bergeron joined Ray Bourque (1,506), Johnny Bucyk (1,339), and Phil Esposito (1,012) as the only Bruins players to have recorded 1,000 points.

“The players love him. I joked around the other day, I’m like if he had any kind of cheat in his game he might have 1,200 points already, or 1,300,” Boston coach Jim Montgomery said of Bergeron.

“He’s just so dedicated to playing the game the right way and helping the team have success.”

Montgomery compared Bergeron to five-time Selke Trophy winner Bob Gainey. He praised Gainey as the best defensive player, but insisted that Bergeron would pass him as the greatest of all time.

Charlie Coyle, David Krejci, David Pastrnak, and Nick Foligno scored for Boston in the game, helping the Bruins secure their 14th victory in the past 15 games. Meanwhile, goaltender Linus Ullmark made 32 saves.

The Bruins claimed their first lead on their second power play when Foligno completed a shot by Pavel Zacha for his fourth goal. Coyle extended the Bruins’ lead shortly after with his sixth season goal.

Pastrnak’s 12th goal of 2022 furthered the lead before Tampa Bay’s Rudolf Balcers netted his third goal overall and first with the Lightning. Nick Paul’s second power-play goal reduced the gap to 5-3 at 10:38, but Ullmark would stop allowing goals from thereon.

Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper acknowledged that Boston is an elite team. He said the game was good for the most part, but the opponents deserved the victory more than his team.

Bergeron, 37, was awarded the secondary assist on Brad Marchand’s second-period goal for his milestone. He became the fourth Bruin to accomplish this feat , joining Ray Bourque (1,506), John Bucyk (1,339), and Phil Esposito (1,012). He is the eighth active NHL player to reach that milestone.

“It’s a tribute to him. If he had any kind of cheat in his game, he might have 1200 points already…or 1300. But he’s just so dedicated to playing the game the right way.”
