In one of the tightest MVP races in recent NBA history, Denver Nuggets Nikola Jokic beat out Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers and Gianni Antetokounmpo to win the award for 2022.

The NBA is expected to issue an official statement this week, but ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Monday morning that the four-time All-Star was selected winner of the award for a second consecutive year.

The 27-year-old Jokic averaged 27.1 points, 13.8 rebounds, and 7.9 assists in the regular season. The Serbian native led Denver to a 48-win season despite missing two great players in Jamaal Murray and Michael Porter Junior.

The NBA has grown from having five international players in the league’s first season in 1946-47 to 113 at the start of the 2016-17 season. At present, 109 international players represent 39 countries in the NBA.

“We are a country of basketball. This is more proof that we are the best. It is not easy for a country like Serbia with 7 million people to compete with the rest of the world.”

- Marko Ćosić, who trained a teenage Jokic as strength and conditioning coach at Belgrade club Mega

Wilt Chamberlain set a standard that Jokic is trying to reach

Wilt Chamberlain won two NBA championships, earned four regular-season Most Valuable Player awards, the Rookie of the Year award, one NBA Finals MVP award, and was selected to 13 All-Star teams.

Not without Controversy

Not everyone agrees with Jokic’s selection.  Joel Embiid was certainly deserving.

"I do think this whole analytic-driven society, world is out of control at times with some of the measures that they use. Like, watch the dang game and decide is what I've always said."

"It's just remarkable what he's done, I know that I'm very biased, I admit it wholeheartedly — the MVP isn't even a competition. There's other great players, I'm not saying they're not great players, but what Nikola Jokic has done this year, with this team, with everything that we've had to go through, is incredible."

If Jokic Wins Again In 2023 It Would Put Him In Elite Company

Jokic wins for a second straight season, joining legendary company. Other players who have won two consecutive titles are Antetokounmpo, Stephen Curry, LeBron James (twice), Steve Nash, Tim Duncan, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Moses Malone,p and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (twice).  Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell were the only players in NBA history to win the MVP title three straight seasons.
