Arch Manning, a member of the Manning family football dynasty, has ended the drawn-out drama over where he will play college football. He publicly announced his commitment to attend and play for the University of Texas on Thursday, June 23, 2023.

Speculation ended on June 23, 2023

New Orleans’ high-school standout quarterback announced his decision on June 23 after months of speculation in the sports media. Prior to deciding on the University of Texas at Austin, Manning had also considered the LSU, Georgia, Alabama, Clemson, and Virginia football programs.

Quinn Ewers – formerly the top recruit in the 2021 class – has also been added by Texas via transfer from Ohio State, but Ewers’ future as the starting quarterback could become interesting once Manning arrives on campus.

"I’m the one going to college, not my parents and not my coaches, no one’s pressuring me to do anything. I mean, I don’t even have to play football in college if I don’t want to. But I want to go play at a good school, and I think every college has something great to offer. I’m not singling out anywhere."

Drought in Texas

Fans and officials alike hope Manning’s talent will help the Longhorns win another national championship (or two, three, or four). The Horns finished last season with a 5-7 record and failed to qualify for a bowl game. There hasn’t been a national championship for Texas since Vince Young led the team to a 13-0 record in 2005.

"You have to stack five-star quarterbacks on five-star quarterbacks, just like Kirby Smart did when he got to Georgia with Justin Fields and Jake Fromm. Nick Saban has done this consistently at Alabama. That coaching tree, that's the way they go about their business."

Manning has a hype machine following him around

Three other Manning quarterbacks have contributed to that high profile family: uncles Peyton and Eli, and grandfather Archie.

Arch threw for 1,947 yards and 26 touchdowns, while also scoring seven rushing touchdowns as a high-school junior at Isidore Newman in New Orleans.

During his high school career, Manning has thrown for 6,307 yards, 81 touchdowns passing and 19 touchdowns rushing. He’s averaged 212 yards of passing per game, and has thrown only 18 interceptions in his career. He averages almost 13 yards per pass.
