The National Hockey League is expected to complete its investigation into allegations that San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane gambled on NHL games soon.
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told Sportsnet on Thursday that he expects the league’s investigation into Kane to be concluded before the Sharks begin their training camp next week.
The league opened its investigation into Kane on July 31, after his estranged wife Anna posted on Instagram claiming that her husband was “throwing games to win money.”
Anna wrote, “Can someone ask (NHL commissioner) Gary Bettman how they can let a player gamble on his own games? Bet and win with bookies on his own games?”
According to The Athletic, several Sharks players became fed up with Kane over the course of last season because of his attitude toward team rules and asked San Jose general manager Doug Wilson to kick the 30-year-old off the team.
Kane addressed this issue in an interview with ESPN’s Linda Cohn.
“I think it’s easy to point the finger at me,” Kane said. “I think it’s easy to try to make me the scapegoat because of some of my personal issues that are playing out in the public and point to that. I think it’s an easy cop-out. At the same time, I don’t necessarily know or believe that that’s true. So, when it comes to the media, I really take it with a grain of salt.”
The former Buffalo Sabers player also said he never gambled on NHL games, tried to lose a game on purpose, or changed the way he played because of a bet.
“Obviously, incredibly false,” Kane said. “It’s unfortunate that that transpired. It’s unfortunate that those allegations, false allegations, were made.”
