The NHL Department of Player Safety announced on Sunday that Chicago Blackhawks forward Brett Connolly has been suspended for four games without pay for his actions during a game versus the Dallas Stars.

Connolly collided with Stars forward Tanner Kero at 3:02 of the first period in Dallas’ 4-3 overtime win at American Airlines Center on Saturday. Kero had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher. Connolly then was assessed a five-minute major penalty for interference and a game misconduct on the play.

“Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Connolly will forfeit $70,000 and the money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund,” NHL said.

Blackhawks coach Derek King did not expect the incident would cause a serious impact on Kero and hoped the center would recover soon.

“You don’t want to see that or wish that on anybody,” King said post-game. “(Connolly) is not that type of player, so I don’t know if it was just a weird collision or he didn’t really see him, but you just hope Tanner is good. Tanner’s a real good kid, and I had him in Rockford for a little bit. Like I said, you don’t want to see that, but it does happen in this game. Hopefully, he’s fine.”

On the other hand, Stars forward Joe Pavelski praised Kero’s tenacity and perseverance during the game.

“Tanner, he’s awesome,” Pavelski said. “He’s soft-spoken, shows up, works hard, doesn’t miss a day. When he gets called on to play, he shows up. He makes great plays, he plays hard. He’s a great teammate. That win’s definitely for him.”
