NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman spoke on Monday regarding the sexual assault allegations against former Chicago Blackhawks video coach Bradley Aldrich. Aldrich had allegedly sexually assaulted prospect Kyle Beach back in 2010.

Bettman offered an apology to Beach on the behest of the league and said he was “horrified” to watch Beach’s tell-all interview on Toronto-based sports network TSN last week.

“We could not be more sorry for the trauma that Kyle has had to endure and our goal is to do what is necessary to continue to move forward,” said Bettman. “It was emotional. I was distressed. And I knew that he had obviously been suffering just by watching him and I wanted to make sure that we were continued to be focused on how to deal with what was now in front of us and I was sorry as a personal matter that anybody, particularly him, had to go through what he was discussing.”

On the other hand, the commissioner defended the league’s decision by ordering the Blackhawks to pay a $2 million fine. Half of that fine will be directed to Chicago-area organizations that support victims of abuse.

“While it may have optically not been the best look, I was more concerned with the substance than the look,” Bettman said. “People can and have debated the amount of the fine, but it was substantial by any measure and acknowledges that the organization failed to act appropriately. Also, the fine sends, as intended, a message to all clubs as to how I view their organizational responsibilities.”

Bettman and the NHL were highly criticized for letting Joel Quenneville, former Chicago coach when the alleged sexual abuse happened, coach one more game for the Florida Panthers and not penalize Winnipeg GM Kevin Cheveldayoff because of his role in the Blackhawks’ front office at the time.

Quenneville resigned as Panthers coach after meeting with Bettman last week.
