On Tuesday, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft were reportedly involved in a heated exchange amid talks on NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract.

According to sources, Kraft is among those who support the league’s compensation committee to hold negotiations with Goodell regarding bonuses and financial goals for the commissioner’s new contract.

The meeting, held in New York this Tuesday, wrapped up with a 31-1 vote in favor of owners to open negotiations with the commissioner. Jones, who could not accept the outcome of the vote, stood up and told Kraft, “Don’t f— with me.”

Perplexed by the sudden aggression, Kraft said, “Excuse me?” to which Jones replied, “Don’t mess with me.” The altercation took place before the motion for the meeting was passed.

Jones has been very outspoken against Goodell’s contract over the past years. According to ESPN, the 80-year-old owner’s concern with the commissioner’s new deal is “the structure of Goodell’s compensation.”

Since Goodell inked a five-year contract in 2017, Jones has been among those who push for the commissioner’s deal to be based on performance instead of salaried.

An NFL insider said Jones was aiming for “corporate good governance and wants accountability.”

Meanwhile, another source claimed that the commissioner’s contract could be too vague and lacked strict financial goals for Jones. In previous talks, Jones also called Goodell’s contract unclear in terms of financial targets.

Nonetheless, most voters were pleased with Goodell’s tenure in the NFL. An anonymous owner told ESPN that they were considering having Goodell, who took office in 2006 to replace Paul Tagliabue, in charge for another two or three years.

"He (Jones) believes in corporate good governance and wants accountability on the financial goals tied to Roger's bonus. He is sensitive to awarding a big bonus to Roger before he performs and earns it.”
