On Wednesday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell held his Super Bowl media briefing, during which he was questioned about the league’s recent paucity of minority head coaches.

Former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores has brought a class-action lawsuit against the NFL, Dolphins, New York Giants, and Denver Broncos, bringing the issue to the forefront.

Flores also said that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross gave him $100,000 for each loss in 2019 in order for the team to secure the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

After the regular season, there were nine open head coaching vacancies. Only one of the positions was held by a Black candidate.

Then, Lovie Smith was hired as the new head coach of the Houston Texans.

Also, Mike McDaniel, a minority coach who identifies as multi-racial, was also hired by the Miami Dolphins. Previously, he was the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers.

During his press conference, Goodell stated that such a case was “very disturbing” since it may jeopardize the sport’s credibility. He reaffirmed that the NFL will investigate the claims and that anything that breaches the league’s integrity “will not be tolerated.”

In addition to the civil lawsuit, Goodell noted that if he finds that franchises are breaking the principle of nondiscrimination, the NFL will take some action.

According to the commissioner, the league won’t tolerate racism and discrimination. He also stated that the NFL will examine if policies such as the “Rooney Rule” need to be changed.

Goodell went on to say that he “bears responsibility” for the league’s challenges to improve diversity in coaching and other top jobs on teams and in the league.

Other than expanding diversity, he claims that no topic has been “discussed more frequently” in the league during the last five years.
