The new NFL season has officially begun with a game between the defending champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Dallas Cowboys at Raymond James Stadium on Thursday night.

Fans once again filled the stadium after the NFL allowed venues to welcome them with no capacity limit. Other major leagues such as the NBA, NHL, MLB, NCAA are also following suit.

“Seven months ago, we made NFL history,” said Tampa Bay owner Bryan Glazer to welcome the fans during a pre-game ceremony. “There was one thing missing: All of you. Welcome back to Raymond James Stadium.”

The United States is currently dealing with rising COVID-19 cases due to the Delta variant. According to reports, there are more than 150,000 new cases a day, and so far, over 650,000 Americans have died.

Peter O’Reilly, NFL executive vice president of club business and events, said the league would keep the channels of communication open with the government if there is a new regulation regarding stadiums.

“We and our clubs are in daily and regular conversations with local and state authorities, but as we sit here right now, we don’t anticipate any reduction in capacity this year,” said O’Reilly in the league’s last briefing. “We really feel good about where we stand, given the vaccination rates across the country, and feel as though we will be able to move through the season.”

NFL teams can implement their own guidelines and protocols. Proof of vaccination is mandatory for the Seattle Seahawks, Las Vegas Raiders, and New Orleans Saints fans to enter the stadiums. Other teams may follow shortly.

The league hasn’t made vaccines a mandate for players. So far, 93.5 percent of players are vaccinated. Seventeen teams are above 95 percent, with the Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons at 100 percent.
