The NBA announced on Wednesday that it will not pay players for missing games because they are not vaccinated, following local vaccine mandates in New York and San Francisco.

NBA spokesman Michael Bass said in a statement released to several media outlets: “Any player who elects not to comply with local vaccination mandates will not be paid for games that he misses.”

Kyrie Irving of the Brooklyn Nets still won’t take the vaccine, and Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins’ request for vaccine exemption was denied by the league earlier this week.

NBA teams usually play half of their games at home. This would keep these two players from playing in at least 41 out of 82 games this season, which will put a serious hit on their bank accounts.

According to TMZ, Wiggins, who is in a 5-year, $147 million deal, could potentially lose $15.8 million this season, while Irving, who has a 4-year, $136 million contract, will forfeit $17.5 million.

Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal is the latest player to refuse to get vaccinated against COVID-19, and with the new policy, he might lose a portion of his pay as well.
