Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins received a decision from the NBA regarding the status of his vaccine exemption request, and it was not what he wanted to hear.
Earlier this month, the league released a new COVID-19 regulation that requires teams to follow local health guidelines.
Shams Charania of The Athletic reported the news via Twitter.
“Sources: Unvaccinated NBA players in markets with local requirements — such as NYC (Knicks, Nets) and SF (Warriors) — will not be allowed to enter home arenas or facilities for games or team activities conducted there unless there’s approved medical or religious exemption.”
Since Wiggins is unvaccinated and must follow the new NBA regulation in order to practice and play at Chase Center (Warriors home arena in San Francisco), the Canadian international wrote a request to the league for an exemption on religious grounds.
The NBA released a statement on Friday: “The NBA has reviewed and denied Andrew Wiggins’ request for religious exemption from the San Francisco Department of Public Health’s order requiring COVID-19 vaccination for all participants age 12 and older at large indoor events. Wiggins will not be able to play in Warriors home games until he fulfills the city’s vaccination requirements.”
Wiggins still has plenty of time to be vaccinated since San Francisco’s mandate doesn’t take effect until the middle of October. Training camps officially open on Tuesday. The Warrior’s home opener is Oct. 19.
