The Chicago White Sox are close to signing a deal with veteran Houston Astros pitcher Kendall Graveman, per reports.

According to MLB Insider’s Jon Heyman, the White Sox and free agent Graveman have agreed to a three-year deal in the neighborhood of $24 million. The 31-year-old will serve as a backup for Liam Hendriks, who was named the American League Reliever of the Year.

If this move is finalized, Chicago might trade Craig Kimbrel, whose $16 million 2022 option was picked up by the Sox earlier this offseason.

White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said this month at the GM Meetings that the club might find Kimbrel a new team this winter. However, he might also be waiting until the 2022 trade deadline before the White Sox could find a suitable arrangement.

“What we have to figure out is whether it makes the most sense to have Craig in a White Sox uniform going forward, or is there a better use of that spot and him perhaps via trade,” Hahn said.

Graveman, a former Mariners and Astros pitcher, has a 1.77 ERA in 56 innings of work and has struck out 61 batters. He held a 1.64 ERA in nine appearances through the World Series as well.
