The Minnesota Wild announced Tuesday that they had reached a five-year contract extension worth around $45 million with star forward Kirill Kaprizov.

The 24-year old played in Kontinental Hockey League in Russia from 2014 until March 2020, although Minnesota Wild had drafted him in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He spent his final season in the KHL with HC CSKA Moscow before he moved to the United States.

Kaprizov then signed a two-year entry deal with the Wild in July 2020 and made his NHL debut against the Los Angeles Kings earlier this year.

Wild GM Bill Guerin told reporters last week that patience was key in the signing of the deal with the Russia native.

“You have to stay patient,” Guerin said. “It’s not just us that’s involved in this. It’s a player and his feelings and what he feels, so we all process it kind of differently. These things are complicated and can take time.”

It was reported that negotiations between the Wild and Kaprizov were not all smooth. Sources told ESPN there was “a deafening silence” between both sides in the summer.

And now that’s all over. Kaprizov posted a simple message on Instagram with the caption “Let’s go” after signing the deal.

Kaprizov won the Calder Trophy last season after an incredible rookie campaign that saw him score a team-high 27 goals and 24 assists. He also recorded 51 points in 55 games as an NHL rookie last season.

Kaprizov has represented Russia in multiple tournaments at the international level, such as World Under-18 Championships, World Junior Championships, and IIHF World Championships. He also won a gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
