With 11:52 left in the game, Toronto Maple Leafs right winger Ilya Mikheyev scored a power play goal to give the Maple Leafs a 3-2 lead over the Edmonton Oilers at Scotiabank Arena on Wednesday.

An empty net goal by Alexander Kerfoot with 15 seconds left in the game gave Toronto the 4-2 win.

The Russian-born Mikheyev was glad he could contribute to his team’s victory.

“Of course it’s good for me, but it’s more important that I played good games the last few games, and it’s important more than goals,” Mikheyev said. “If I have a chance for a shot, why not? I’m going to try to just keep shooting.”

Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe was pleased with his player’s performance.

“Mikheyev makes us a better team, there’s no question about that,” Keefe said. “And it’s not just because he’s scored here. We’ve known that as long as he’s been with us. He makes us a deeper team, a better team.”

While happy with his team’s performance, Oilers coach Dave Tippett tried to explain what made the difference in this game.

“There was lots of try in our game, lots of push, lots of people trying to have an impact on the game, which is good to see,” Tippett said. “We just can’t get that play made that makes a difference on the positive side for us. (This is a) game where every play counts and you need that play to get you over the top. They got it tonight and we didn’t.”
