The New York Mets are swinging big in this year’s free agency market. Their latest acquisition is the signing of starting pitcher Max Scherzer’s to a record-breaking contract worth $130 million, according to multiple reports.
The deal would be for three years and be fully guaranteed, which will make Scherzer the highest-paid MLB player in average annual salary.
According to the New York Post’s Mike Puma, the deal has an opt-out clause after the second season, which means he would have the right to become a free agent once again after the 2023 season.
Scherzer also receives a full no-trade provision, requiring his approval for any deals. The agreement also includes award bonuses.
Scherzer, 37, will become the oldest player in MLB history to sign a $100 million deal. ESPN’s Joon Lee reported that due to Scherzer also deferring money on his Washington Nationals contract, he would be making $58.3 million annually during his Mets tenure.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner and eight-time All-Star will make more than new teammate Jacob deGrom ($36 million per season) and New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole (also $36 million per season).
Scherzer was 15-4 with a 2.46 ERA last season for the Washington Nationals and Los Angeles Dodgers. He struck out 236 and walked 36 in 179 1/3 innings, averaging 94.4 mph with his fastball.

Am I the only one mildly infuriated by this photoshop job?
"The Mets and Max Scherzer agreed to a three-year, $130 million deal on Monday, The Post confirmed. The contract comes with a record $43.33 million average annual salary and an opt out after the second year, along with a full no-trade clause."
Lot a mileage on that arm...
still waiting for final word, but reports indicate the Mets and Max Scherzer are finalizing a deal
Mets make huge bet on Max Scherzer.
Damn I just remembered Trevor Bauer exists.
So dumb
And he hesitated to sign Lindor?
Does Scherzer normally have two different colored eyes or is this just the photoshop?
