Three-time All-Star Brad Hand was claimed off waivers by the New York Mets after the Toronto Blue Jays released the pitcher on Thursday.
Mets manager Luis Rojas praised the move as “a great acquisition.”
“This is a high-leverage guy,” Rojas said to the media. “We understand that he’s been going through some struggles lately, but this can be a refresh for him. He pitched really well against us this year, a guy that’s been used as a closer with different teams. So I think it’s an upgrade for us. It’s a great acquisition by our front office, sending a message to us, the team, and the whole Mets nation out there that we’re fighting for this.”
The 31-year-old has been struggling since his trade to Toronto, which led him to be put into the DFA (Designate for Assignment) list on Tuesday until the Mets claimed him.
He is expected to join the Mets this weekend in Washington.
Hand joined the league after being selected by the Florida Marlins in the second round of the 2008 MLB Draft. Since then, he has played for San Diego Padres, Cleveland Indians, Washington Nationals, and Toronto Blue Jays.
