Jack Mayfield and Shohei Ohtani both performed brilliantly for the Los Angeles Angels against the New York Yankees on Monday night.
Mayfield blasted a ball over the fence for his first career grand slam, while Ohtani hit a homer to help the Angels beat the Yankees 8-7.
The 30-year-old Mayfield recalled what went through his mind at that moment.
“It was amazing,” Mayfield said of his fourth-inning grand slam against Yankees pitcher Corey Kluber. “I blacked out a little bit. I don’t remember running the bases. It’s definitely one of the most exciting moments of my career.”
Angels manager Joe Maddon praised Mayfield for what he has achieved so far.
“He’s done good work,” Maddon said. “Let’s give him an opportunity. I’m not saying anything is etched in stone by any means for next year, but I want to see him at shortstop a little bit, too.”
Meanwhile, Ohtani did not pitch in the game since he still felt soreness in his right wrist after getting hit by a pitch on Saturday, but the 27-year-old still managed to add his 42nd home run to his already impressive season statistics.
Even the opposition manager was astonished by Ohtani’s achievement this season.
“It’s remarkable,” said Aaron Boone, Yankees manager. “It’s hard to wrap my brain around it, honestly.”
