The Dallas Mavericks’ 130-120 victory over the San Antonio Spurs last Sunday was clouded with concerns, as their star point guard Luka Doncic strained his left calf.
Doncic banged knees with the Spurs’ Zach Collins and instantly called for a timeout. His MRI results came out Monday and the injury was confirmed.
Although there is no official announcement from the Mavericks regarding the tentative date of Doncic’s return, there is a high expectation for him to recover and be ready to play by Saturday for the team’s next game against the visiting Utah Jazz.
“There’s initial optimism that Dallas star Luka Doncic hasn’t suffered a significant injury, source tells ESPN. Team is calling it a strained left calf,” wrote Adrian Wojnarowski.
“For some reason, I feel like he’ll be ready to go,” Doncic’s teammate guard Jalen Brunson commented after Sunday’s game. “Knowing the competitor that he is, I feel like he’ll be ready. It’s unfortunate, but a competitor like that you can’t keep down for long.”
The three-time NBA All-Star averaged 28.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 8.7 assists per game this season.
He was almost suspended for the regular-season finale for his 16th technical foul of the season in Friday’s rout of the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Mavericks, who were close to achieving their goal of securing third place, had to settle for being fourth following the Golden State Warriors’ victory. This Saturday, they will be competing against the Jazz at the American Airlines Center at 1 p.m.
