Miami Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara has been named the 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner. He is the first Marlins pitcher to take home the award.

The Colorado Rockies and Texas Rangers are now the only teams that have never had a pitcher win the award.

Alcantara swept all 30 first-place votes from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, defeating the other finalists — Max Fried of the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Julio Urías.

“It makes me feel so special because I came here to the Marlins with my positive mentality—just tried to win. Tried to compete, tried to get better,” Alcantara said.

“This year I put everything in the same spot, working hard. I’ve had great success. And now to win the National League Cy Young, I feel so happy and blessed.”

The 27-year-old led Major League Baseball with 228 2/3 innings pitched. He also threw six complete games — the most by any player — and finished with an ERA of 2.28 (second), a .980 WHIP (sixth), and 207 strikeouts (fourth) in the National League.

In 14 of his 32 starts, he pitched at least eight innings. His 8.0 WAR surpassed Aaron Nola’s 6.0 in the NL, ranking him first in team history.

Alcantara made his second career All-Star appearance in the 2022 season. He made his first All-Star team when he joined the major league in 2019.

He joined Pedro Martinez, who won the award in 1997, as the only two Dominican-born players to win the ward.

Martinez also won the AL MVP award twice, in 1999 and 2000. Bartolo Colon was the other Dominican winner in the AL in 2005.

Miami signed Alcantara after the 2017 season in a trade that sent Marcell Ozuna to the St. Louis Cardinals. In December 2021, he agreed to a five-year, $56 million deal with a club option for 2027.

An improved changeup took Alcantara to another level this year.  Batters hit just .145 against it with zero home runs in 248 at-bats. It’s a power change that averaged 91.8 mph.  According to Statcast metrics, his changeup saved 25 runs, the most valuable changeup in the game in 2022.

"The hard work, the positivity, every day, fighting for my team, competing against any team. That makes it special,'' he said. "My mentality all the time is to be aggressive. Try to get better every day. And I'll keep doing the same. And let's see if I can win the Cy Young next year, too."
