Seattle Mariners rookie Julio Rodriguez has been nothing but amazing this season. The 21-year-old outfielder stole the 2022 MLB All-Star Game with his outstanding performance and reached the final round of this year’s Home Run Derby, even though he fell to Washington Nationals star Juan Soto in the final.

On the Rise

J-Rod came to MLB after he signed with the Mariners as an international free agent in 2017. The Dominican international made his debut in the major league on Opening Day this season. He was having a dry spell with no home runs in 20 games and batted .205/.284/.260 in April.

Since then Rodríguez seems to have flipped a switch and transformed into one of baseball’s rising talents in a blink of an eye. He has played 71 games since May and he’s batting .293/.351/.535 alongside 16 homers and 12 stolen bases.

“I feel like I just came out to do what I do,” he told Seattle Times. “I guess they know me a little more. I’ve just gotta keep on going, keep on staying focused and staying within myself in the way that I have been doing. I’m just being me.”

“It was amazing,” White Sox's Liam Hendriks said before the All-Star Game, as per Sports Illustrated. “You see how easy some of those homers were, you see the swings … I just love the personality and the vibe he brings. It’s something that I think this game needs more of. It needs more personalities. It needs more people with bat tosses and screaming and all this sort of stuff.”

What happens when talent pushes the hype

Following the All-Star break, Seattle announced that Friday’s game against the Houston Astros is sold out. According to the Mariners, approximately 37,000 tickets have been sold for Saturday’s game and around 30,000 sold for the series finale with the Astros.
