Former New York Yankees manager Buck Showalter told the public what fans want from a manager.
Speaking on the MLB Network after the New York Mets named Billy Eppler their new general manager on November 18, Showalter explained what Mets fans “want in your general manager, and a manager, from that standpoint, it’s that you care about the team as much as I (the fans) do.”
Meanwhile, reports said that this week that the Mets would hold a second round of interviews with three managerial candidates: veteran manager Showalter, along with Joe Espada and Matt Quatraro, who are looking into becoming first-time skippers.
Joining the interview is team owner Steve Cohen with Eppler leading the search to look for Luis Rojas’ replacement, who left the team after two seasons and a 103-199 record.
In his initial review, Showalter likely said the same thing to the Mets, as he hinted at while talking on the MLB Network.
“They (Mets fans) want to know when they wake up that this guy … he’s touching every possible angle to make the Mets better,” Showalter said. “Are you engaged? Does it mean as much to you as it does to them? They’re the ones who get up and read all the Mets transactions and thinks about the offseason and what’s going on and what have you, and they got somebody like that in Billy. Billy’s engaged and he loves to compete and I also think they got a real ethical guy who’s going to do the right moral thing as the tiebreaker.”
