Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell got emotional at the post-game press conference on Sunday after the Minnesota Vikings beat his Lions 19-17.
Detroit was leading by one point with 37 seconds left on the clock after running back D’Andre Swift scored on a seven-yard rush. Campbell was confident in his team so he instructed them to go for the two-point conversion and it worked!
However, Minnesota turned the table on the Lions when Greg Joseph nailed a 54-yard field goal with no time left on the clock to secure the win for the Vikings.
“When you see your players give all that they have and you lose that way, it’s tough,” Campbell said. “You don’t want that for them. But we’ll be better for it and credit Minnesota. We made the one mistake that cost us. Ultimately, we didn’t do enough to win.”
Lions linebacker Trey Flowers seconded his coach’s words.
“It hurts,” Flowers said. “It hurts. But like I said, but nobody feels sorry that it hurts. We just got to break through. We’re there. We’re at the door, just got to break through, got to keep swinging.”
This is Campbell’s fifth straight defeat since the start of the regular season. The 45-year-old coach said he wants to change things around if the management still believes in him.
“I try to just keep picturing in my head, because I know it’s coming is, we’re going to be on the winning side of these before long,” Campbell said. “Hopefully sooner than later, but it’s coming. I just don’t know when, but it’s coming. When you play that way and fight that way and clean a couple of these little mishaps that have shot us in the foot, our days of being on the winning side of that are coming.”
